One of music’s true great artists Tom Petty has sadly passed away at the age of 66 at his home in California.
Unfortunately it seems in the past few months/years we’ve been losing some of the great’s that have influenced so many artists over the years. Today we lost another in the form of Tom Petty who made his name in music creating the band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, then as a solo artist and briefly as part of supergroup The Travelling Wilbury’s.
I wouldn’t consider myself to be a Tom Petty fan but like many others I would imagine most will know some of his songs when they hear them or some my say when they hear one of his songs for the first time, is that Tom Petty I didn’t know that was done by him. I’m of the age when I remember some early songs from his solo career but got to learn more of his back catalogue through listening to rock radio stations like Planet Rock. He had many hit’s over the years and some will remember hits like ‘American Girl’ or ‘Free Fallin’, for me probably the first song I remember will be ‘Don’t Come Around Here No More’ and it’s video. I don’t think I’d be wrong to say that he is an artist who influenced many artists/bands over a number of years and a number of musical genres. Unfortunately Tom Petty was an artist that I’ve never seen live and it’s one of those occasions with his passing that I kind of wish I had taken the chance to see him live.
Like I’ve said in a previous tribute post, social media though this will be a sad time we should be grateful for the music he gave us and what he did to inspire other musicians, it’s just a shame we will never get any more music from him.
RIP Tom Petty 1950 – 2017
