Well in the rock/metal community we’ve had a few sad, shocking losses over the last few years and sadly today we’ve learned of the passing of another with the news of the passing of the former Pantera/Damageplan/Hellyeah drummer Vinnie Paul.

It is safe to say that last year the passing of Soundgardens Chris Cornell and Linkin Parks Chester Bennington came as a big shock, the news I heard today of the passing of Vinnie Paul is to me equally as shocking news. Like many most will have first got to know Vinnie Paul through the music he contributed to whilst a member of the band Pantera. After Pantera split up he went on to form/play in the bands Damageplan and Hellyeah as well as a couple of other bands, who within there own right ( especially Damageplan/Hellyeah ) went on to create some great music and albums. Personally at the time in the 90’s I was mainly into the Grunge scene and it’s bands but I still liked metal/heavier music if it peaked my interest. It just happened that at this time Pantera arrived and partly due to Vinnie Paul’s drumming adding to there aggressive/groovy/metal sound I put them as one of my favourite bands of that time ( and went on to be one of my favourite bands of all time ) to look out for music they released. As previously mentioned at the time in the 90’s the Grunge scene had taken hold and Metal/Rock music was still around but it’s mainstream popularity had dropped a bit, then along came Pantera who bucked this trend and reinvigorated the Metal/Heavy Metal/Rock scene in my personal opinion. With all the bands Vinnie Paul played in in my opinion due to his signature drumming style/sound he created it helped create/contribute to the sound/style of all bands he performed with/was a member of.

I can only comment from seeing interviews/videos of Vinnie Paul as a person but I feel it’s safe to say he comes across as one of the genuinely nice people in rock/metal to have known, coming across as friendly and always having time to speak/interact with fans. So it’s this along with the music he leaves behind that makes the news of his passing equally as saddening. My thoughts and those of the rock/metal/music community are with his family and friends at the sad time but I’m sure he’ll be now sinking a few Black Tooth Grins with his brother Dimebag Darrell Abbott. RIP Vinnie Paul
